Temporary Security System in Place:

As I understand it, our sercurity system in partially in place. Which means it’s more restrictive than it will be by mid-July when alot of the security issues are scheduled to be ironed out. (Please be patient, the CIS staff and consultants Paul and Kathleen Kelm are very busy doing several months worth of stuff in just a few short weeks, especially be nice to Kathleen since she’s primarily donating most of her time to the college; bless you, Kathleen.)

Publishing your work:

So here’s the scoop based on our trial and errors of yesterday afternoon and the fall-out thereafter.  We have three options for publishing:

(1)       Publish to the intranet site (once it’s there only the site administrator currently has access to changing it. Soon I’ll have access to changing it for you, just contact me to let me know you want to replace current files and I’ll do it within a day or two (I’m on campus teaching MTWF evenings until mid-July and by then hopefully you’ll have more access). You can upload the first copy yourself, but when you want to change files that are already up there, it looks like.(And yes, we’re really going to get access to our own department’s directory by the end of the summer (if not sooner, this is not an empty promise).)

(2)            Download to the shared files directory on the server. This way you’re not restricted to the same computer when you want to come into the lab to modify your stuff, but you’re not quite ready to put the “finished” (O.K., you’re never finished) product up onto the intranet site.

(3)            Download to your disk, the ultimate in portablility.

Steps for “publishing” the intranet site:

This isn’t true publishing to the intranet (there’s a FrontPage option under file to do this with a mere click of a button, but we currently don’t have the mini-webs set up within the intranet site; we’ll be doing that later and it will make this publishing business sooooooooo much easier.)

1.      Open up the intranet website, under File, just as you had your own personal website originally.

2.      In the Intranet web, under File, choose Import. Then Import File. Choose all the files one at a time to be imported, be sure to include graphics files as well as html files.

You’re done!

Viewing your published work on the intranet site:

Open your favorite browser on campus, this is the intranet after all, and check it out! The root directory is

http://www.edgewood.edu/intranet/

Downloading your work to either the f:\shared or a: directories

Open Windows Explorer, open c:\webshare\wwwroot and all your html and graphics files are there. then move the left frame to either the f:shared or a: directories, keeping the right frame on your work. Then just drag and drop your files from the right frame into the directory in the left frame. This copies your files to the new directory.

Viewing your files in a directory (not on the web) using a browser:

Open your favorite browser, anywhere. Then under File, choose the Open File, then type in the file name including the directory where it is, e.g., a:\kenstuff.html, or f:\shared\website\ken\kenstuff.html.
