Catalog description:

Mathematical Models is a course designed to introduce students to some of the common mathematical tools used in various applications. The mathematical theory will be developed at a deep enough level to enable students to understand and solve real-world problems, but no mathematics will be introduced that does not have ready application. While these applications are the focus of the course, students will also learn about some of the connections between mathematics and other disciplines and larger societal issues involving mathematics.  Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on Edgewood’s Math Placement Examination or transferred college level math course.

Course Topics:

·         Linear Mathematical Models

·         Systems of Linear Equations

·         Linear Programming

·         Quadratic Mathematical Models

·         Exponential and Logarithmic Mathematical Models

Course Goals:

Upon successful completion of this course, each student should be able to:

·         Model real-world problems using linear, quadratic, and exponential functions. (1,2,4,5)*

·         Apply systems of equations to real world applications. (2)

·         Optimize resources by solving two-dimensional linear programming problems & set up larger problems that can be solved with appropriate software. (3)

·         Use Excel (or other appropriate technology) to carry out the preceding applications. (ALL)

·         Analyze and solve complex problems by choosing and implementing the appropriate mathematical tools and drawing conclusions based on the results.(ALL)

*The number(s) in (parenthesis) denotes the class session(s) in which the course goal will be covered.
